Heavy Lids | Marc Manning
Marc Manning is a artist and musician living and working in San Francisco.
He has released music under the monikers, legend of boggy creek, everything
is fine, red weather tigers, and heavy lids. He has performed extensively on
the east and west coasts over the past 10 years. Manning is
a veteran of several Philadelphia atmospheric bands, the shoe gazer art rock
of "the legend of boggy creek" and cave core rock of "everything is fine".Likewise his visual art has
been well exhibited on both coasts. In 2004 manning exhibited a show of
abstract photographs at Disjecta gallery in Portland OR which featured an
audio cd to accompany the images. Based on the music from that exhibit
Dragons eye recordings released “things are happening at the same time” in
2006 which was packaged with a hand made book of Mannings drawings. This
release marked the beginning of a creative relationship between composer and
label director of dragons eye Yann Novak which has since inspired several
critically lauded collaborative recordings.

WEBSITE
San Francisco native Marc Manning is a Portland based musician who explores the possibilities of the guitar. He has a discography of five releases on the labels Tract Records, Dragons Eye Recordings, hinah and Not on Label. One of his latest collaborations is with Dragons Eye label’s manager Yann Novak on ‘Pairings’ (2007). Manning just released his album ‘A Skeleton, Soon and then Forever’ on Dragons Eye... within guitar soundscapes, discrete guitar distortions, delicate guitar chords and ambient.
It’s interesting your point of view about that we are going to be skeletons most of our existence. How did you shape this thought on ‘A Skeleton, Soon and then Forever’?
It’s a day dream I have been having for a long time now. Just stuff that circles around my head when I’m walking around doing all the stuff I need to do day to day. One day I was looking at my arm and I had the thought about it. That it was going to be bones for a way longer time than it was going to be an arm. So that is more like its natural state....
Do you combine you music with other art forms?
Not much at all. Mostly just the handmade books I have put with the CD’s, I would love to do more! I would love to make movies... that will happen soon I hope! I would also love to work with other film makers.
On ‘A Skeleton, Soon…’ the guitar evolved endlessly creating spirals of melodic soundscapes. What would you say about this process and what would you like to produce in the listeners?
I really wanted to create a fragile twinkly kaleidoscope of guitar noises. That had an emphasis on analog buzz and noise. I wanted the sounds my old tube amp made to be front and center. We got this affect by endlessly playing and looping guitar parts along with Kamran Sedechi's interesting mike placement.
Please tell us about your side-projects nowadays?
I’m still working on new Everything is Fine music with new member Ryan Wasterlain. It will be more like my experimental stuff only with vocals and drums. I am also working on a remix project with Kanda in Portland called Blurry Demons. So far there are 5 songs done.
