Brittle Stars

Brittle Stars (aka Kev Rolfe) has been recording properly for just over 4 years; though he has been recording music and experimenting with sound since he was 16 when he was given access to a 2 track karaoke machine by a friend. He still has a box of cassettes containing these early experiments, most of which will never be heard (if not in their original form). Kevin started playing guitar at 15 when he bought a semi acoustic guitar, and it wasnt long before he started detuning the strings so that he could play it easier and faster to catch up with his friends who were all in bands. The detunings stayed as he explored different harmonics, rewirings and became influenced by Indonesian Music, Indian Ragas and artists like Glenn Branca, Rhys Chattam & Roy Montgomery and was given/ bought/ stole various guitars and basses. One would remain in tune while all the others were rewired. Just over four years ago Kev was bought a digital 8-track portable studio so he could start doing something with all these instruments. A huge amount of tracks were recorded under the 2 guises of Brittle Stars and Monokomm (this is an DIY analogue electronica project using cheap electronic instruments and toys). The majority of the tracks were and still remain under the Brittle Stars monikor as these are more organic/improvised/ less 'constructed' and can be recorded in one take and are more spontanious. And they can be played live better as 1 person. After putting the tracks on Myspace interest was shown. Brittle Stars debut live gig was on 06/05/07 as part of the Sounds From The Other City festival in manchester. Accompanied by 2 friends on extra detuned guitars they performed a continuous 3 track 40 minute set that drew comparisons with Spacemen3 & My Bloody Valentine at full pelt. It was deafening and the talk of the festival. Now Brittle Stars is a one man live affair after doing successful solo gigs. Recently a selection of his tracks have been use in in the new film, 'Otto: or, Up with Dead People' by cult director Bruce LaBruce which will premiered at the Sundance Film Festival & Berlin International Film Festival.
