3. CHAMBER MUSIC 4: FILTERED LIGHT

filtered light postcard imageAn Installation by Steve Peters
March 28–May 11, 2008

As part of UNM’s 36th Annual John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium, Seattle-based artist Steve Peters created this four-channel sound installation entitled Chamber Music 4: Filtered Light. Chamber Music is an ongoing series of site-specific sound works derived from field recordings made in buildings when no people are present. These recordings of "silent" room tone are filtered to extract subtle resonant frequencies from the spectrum of (very quiet) broadband noise. In this case, an hour-long stereo recording was made during off hours in the Study Gallery of the UNM Art Museum.

4. NEW RELEASE

de5017 coverSTEVE PETERS | Filtered Light (chamber music 4)

Chamber Music is a series of site-specific sound installations derived from recordings of the empty rooms in which the work is exhibited. No people are present, so the only sounds recorded are those that are incidental to the building itself, or those that leak in from outside. These recordings of ambient room tone are processed to isolate subtle resonant frequencies that become the only materials of the piece. Aside from equalization and gating, no other electronic treatments or instruments of any kind are used. Every version of the piece is different, due to the acoustic and architectural characteristics of each venue.

Filtered Light was made in 2008 for the University of New Mexico Art Museum, in conjunction with the annual UNM Composers’ Symposium. Fourteen frequencies between 70 Hz and 3 kHz were extracted from an unedited hour-long recording made in the empty gallery. That hour was divided into thirty-two segments of varying length that recombined randomly in the continuous four-channel installation. The mix heard here represents one set of possible combinations. A low playback volume is recommended.

Thanks to Yann Novak, Manny Rettinger, Chris Shultis.

MARC MANNING
| A Skeleton, soon and then Forever

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is proud to present A Skeleton, soon and then Forever by Marc Manning. A Skeleton, soon and then Forever addresses the underlying notion that life is only a fraction of the time that the body endures on earth. The songs attempt to communicate the insight that our bodies will in fact be skeletons for most of their existence. The album is sparse and melancholic with a focus on room sound and analog tones. It treats the guitar as a chime-like instrument that falls in and out in kaleidoscopic phases. The first 100 copies of the record sold online are accompanied by a small booklet of drawings that were made during the recording and mixing sessions.

1. Now and then forever
2. Not any time soon
3. Not forever but for a long time
4. Not now but sooner than expected
5. A skeleton for longer than not

YANN NOVAK | In Residence

Dragon's Eye Recordings is proud to announce the release of In Residence by Yann Novak. In Residence is the final product of three artist residencies Novak attended in the fall of 2007. From each residency a composition was born, compiled here based on their thematic similarities. On In Residence, Novak explores the feelings of isolation some artists experience while working in solitary conditions for long stretches of time. Novak utilized this time to push his process to the limit by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition. The result is a lonely sound world with distant sounds passing by, while the entire piece quivers with anticipation.

Special thanks to The Espy Foundation, Environmental Aesthetics & Kasini House.
