1. YANN NOVAK - WALL OF SOUND IN STORE

Sunday June 8, 2008 5:00pm
Free All Ages In Store Performance!
Plus sweet baked goods!
Location: Wall Of Sound

In Residence (variations) – Yann Novak will present a special set of live alterations to the original field recordings used on his latest release 'In Residence.' And since Yann's music falls into the delicate brushstroke ambient electronic territory, we are going to cover the floor with soft things and lie down for a few minutes ok? Deep breaths for everybody.

Oh, and here's what David Stubbs of The Wire has to say about 'In Residence': "Novak creates a sense of distance by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition - whatever is going in is obscure, and far away. Hence the vague, rotorblading, respiratory effects of the first of these three tracks - the sound of systems ticking over, yet whose undulating motions are curiously involving.

2. ARTOPIA

Saturday, June 28 12pm -10pm

Thom Heileson and Wyndel Hunt's Select—featuring the audiovideo pieces Oov and Unit of Selection 8 from their new Dragon's Eye CD/DVD release, Unit of Selection—will be exhibited as a large scale projection installation at the arts festival Artopia on June 28, produced by the Georgetown neighborhood in partnership with the Seattle Weekly. The installation will be presented in the Rainier Cold Storage Engine Room, a cavernous, post-industrial space adjacent to a site of recent demolition in Georgetown, South Seattle, alongside works by Jim Hobbs, Dan Corson, and Noah Grussgott. The installation will offer an opportunity to experience these aural/visual works in a striking, immersive format, once which the artists and curator anticipate will resonate with the surrounding landscape.

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is pleased to present the release of Unit of Selection, a collaboration between Wyndel Hunt and digital media artist Thom Heileson, in which Heileson’s films are interpretations of Hunt’s sound pieces. The collaboration grew organically out of the realization that the two artists had similar aesthetic and conceptual goals, wherein Hunt’s sound works and Heileson’s video works speak a kindred language--via different media. Unit of Selection aims to fashion new perceptual sculptures, in which the textural fluctuations and movements of each medium carve into one another.

The process began with Hunt’s sound compositions, which are motivated by an unstructured emotional template. This template, combined with the idea of an "anonymous force that shapes," determined the aesthetic order of pitch, tone, and volume. Heileson then created the imagery with an interpretive visualization process, articulating emotive tonalities that paralleled Hunt’s compositions. The results emphasize Hunt and Heileson's shared desire to represent the movement of abstract objects in an imagined perceptual space. Versions of the pieces included in Unit of Selection have been installed in galleries in San Diego and Seattle.

4. RECENT RELEASES

BRITTLE STAR / YANN NOVAK | Long Distance Vol. 3
de2711 | duration: 21:00 | format: 3" cd-r | edition: 100 | OUT NOW!

" The single track, "Melody to Maelstrom", pulses with fragile life, delicate and lovely and almost soundless, like watching a flower open without the benefit of time-lapse photography. Subtle, incremental distortion serves only to draw the ear closer, the better to enjoy this effort of great beauty writ small."
–Stephen Fruitman, Sonomu.net

"The central theme, remains throughout, a haunting presence towards the end, that hints at the processes of the life cycle, from order to chaos, and back again, new life fuelled from decay. This is a fascinating, and obviously fruitful collaboration that more than hints at a future meeting of these two creative minds. Highly recommended."
– Barry G Nichols, White_Line (UK)

de5017 coverSTEVE PETERS | Filtered Light (chamber music 4)
de5017 | duration: 60:00 | format: 5" cd-r | edition: 250 | OUT NOW!

Calmly and majestically, structures of harmonics and deep resonance ripple and breathe, billow and ebb, contracting the space around the listener, while simultaneously revealing the majesty and splendour of the rooms they were culled from. Little themes form in the friction area between two frequencies, running ever so slightly out of sync and at different speeds, sparking tender melodies from the void. It is a music of great, unmeditated harmony, of structures forming constantly like icicles on a window pane.
– Tobias Fischer, Tokafi

"Cut as one track, leaving no room for us to further randomize the event, this is an absolute great piece of music. Very microsound of course, but things move around, change color, change shape and keep evolving throughout the course of the piece... Simply gorgeous.
– Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly(The Netherlands)

MARC MANNING
| A Skeleton, soon and then Forever
de5015 | duration: 50:30 | format: 5" cd-r | edition: 250 | OUT NOW!

"Manning deploys a variety of compositional techniques, creating scrolls of delicacy, wispy tracts like “Not any time soon”, or “Not forever but for a long time”, with their dreamy, almost transcendental moods and shifts. For guitar experimentalists out there, don’t expect Fennesz’s influence here, as Manning uses the instrument in it’s purest form, unadulterated, and unaltered,a work of profound beauty, and stark simplicity."
– Barry G Nichols, White_Line (UK)

"Simple, lush, beautifully played guitar pieces with a lightly ambient touch which emphasises the nature of the room it was recorded in. Earthy, warm and fragile sounding there's an honesty here that will please your ears no end."
– Mike Oliver, Smallfish(UK)

YANN NOVAK | In Residence
de5014 | duration: 46:44 | format: 5" cd | edition: 250 | OUT NOW!

"Novak creates a sense of distance by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition - whatever is going in is obscure, and far away. Hence the vague, rotorblading, respiratory effects of the first of these three tracks - the sound of systems ticking over, yet whose undulating motions are curiously involving."
– David Stubbs, The Wire(UK)

"Deep, dark, yet starkly beautiful, the works unfold slowly and surely using processed textures and sounds. The overall drone sound is magically realised and it won't take long before you're completely hokked into the work."
– Mike Oliver, Smallfish(UK)
