1. 12 MINUTES MAX

On the Board’s oldest program is a showcase for new experimental work. Each evening 5-7 artists have 12 minutes or less to try out new material and works-in-progress in On the Board’s studio theater. Performances are curated by different members of the arts community 7 times a year.

Curated by Scott Lawrimore (Owner, Lawrimore Project) & Julie Tobiason (Former Principal Dancer, PNB)

Feb 17 - 18, 2008

Tickets for 12MM are $8 and are only available one hour before show time in the Studio lobby (No advance sales)

The performance begins at 7pm

• Yann Novak
creates an environment both sonic and visual as the audience enters into the theater. Novak’s In Residence’s video and music are constructed from photographs and recordings collected during three consecutive residencies in the fall of 07. (Music | Video)
• Luminal (Katrina Behrand, Jared Friend, Alice Gosti & Michael McCrea) present On an Unattainable Floor, a collaboration of UW Dept. of Dance and DXARTS students who, through sound synthesis, manipulate the sonic environment between dancers, the audience and the physical space around them. (Dance | Music)
• Kitty Poole, played by recent NYC transplant Becky Poole, is a 6-year-old performance artist who shifts between monstersphilosophizing on dreams about Sting, to playing the musical saw while singing fairy tales. (Theater)
• Part theater, part cabaret, part country show, Joanna Horowitz presents an excerpt from her new one-woman country musical directed by Stranger Genius Award winner Jennifer Zeyl. (Theater | Music)
• Helsinki Syndrome (Rachel Hynes & Mike Pham) return with Upper Culmination, a work-in-progress inspired by the position of a star at a point on its circle above and closest to you. Who the star represents is up for interpretation, but there is a dance with recycled bear skins, songs, audience participation, and secrets left untold. (Theater | Stuff)
• A-Hole Barishnikovs (Richard Lefebvre & David Bucci) make their 12 Minutes Max debut with stories about miserable people in everyday situations accompanied by noise guitar with drum / base loops. (Performance Art | Music)

2. AUDIOVISUAL CONCERT

Dragon's Eye Recordings Presents an evening of audio/video Performances Curated by Kamran Sadeghi at the Chapel Performance Space.

• Kamran Sadeghi | Kha Variations

Kamran Sadeghi's audio/video performance Kha Variations is a live transposition of sound's embedded information into color, shape, and motion. The impermanent nature of sound has inspired Sadeghi to seek ways in which to manipulate its degrees of sensory tangibility. Sadeghi custom designs each animation by assigning a range of visual responses to sound. Kha Variations attempts to externalize sound’s embedded information through visual mapping and construction, and to conversely internalize visual environments through sound.

* Presented as a live video and 4.1 audio performance.

• Yann Novak | In Residence

In Residence is a constantly evolving work that explores the potential to perceive another individual's reactions to time and space. It is a series of experiments in various forms - audiovisual performance, installation, and CD publication. In Residence is constructed from photographs and recordings, collected during three consecutive residencies in fall of 2007, and selected for their unbiased documentation of the surroundings. Through computer manipulation, both photographs and recordings are abstracted. What remains is a translation of experience, from the literal to the romantic, presented as pure experience without ties to original subject-matter.

* Presented here as a video and 4.1 audio performance.

• Wyndel Hunt | Free Dissociation

Free Dissociation originated as a audio/video Installation with Thom Heileson at Soil Art Gallery in November 2007. The installation enveloped the gallery visitor in a textural, audio-visual tapestry that pairs Heileson’s animated visual imagery with Hunt’s similarly abstract sound composition. The artists exploit perceived parallels in their work, which speak in corresponding emotive tones but in different sensory media, to build an immersive perceptual ground delineated by intrinsically linked strata of light and sound.

* Presented as two video excerpts from the installation followed by a live audio performance.

3. NEW RELEASE

MARC MANNING
| A Skeleton, soon and then Forever

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is proud to present A Skeleton, soon and then Forever by Marc Manning. A Skeleton, soon and then Forever addresses the underlying notion that life is only a fraction of the time that the body endures on earth. The songs attempt to communicate the insight that our bodies will in fact be skeletons for most of their existence. The album is sparse and melancholic with a focus on room sound and analog tones. It treats the guitar as a chime-like instrument that falls in and out in kaleidoscopic phases. The first 100 copies of the record sold online are accompanied by a small booklet of drawings that were made during the recording and mixing sessions.

1. Now and then forever
2. Not any time soon
3. Not forever but for a long time
4. Not now but sooner than expected
5. A skeleton for longer than not

YANN NOVAK | In Residence

Dragon's Eye Recordings is proud to announce the release of In Residence by Yann Novak. In Residence is the final product of three artist residencies Novak attended in the fall of 2007. From each residency a composition was born, compiled here based on their thematic similarities. On In Residence, Novak explores the feelings of isolation some artists experience while working in solitary conditions for long stretches of time. Novak utilized this time to push his process to the limit by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition. The result is a lonely sound world with distant sounds passing by, while the entire piece quivers with anticipation.

Special thanks to The Espy Foundation, Environmental Aesthetics & Kasini House.

5. FEATURED RELEASE

MARC MANNING / YANN NOVAK | Pairings

Dragon's Eye Recordings is pleased to announce the release of Pairings, the first full length collaboration between Marc Manning (Heavy Lids) and Yann Novak. Pairings is an exploration into a now standard formula, a traditional instrument processed by laptop. Novak and Manning choose to use the formula to explore their often similar emotional states resulting in six improvisations divided into pairs by instrument. The album moves gently through melancholic drones and ambient washes, ending in a soft flurry of fractured melodies. Pairings showcases the tender relationships between songs, instruments and musicians.

1. Pairing 1 pt. 1
2. Pairing 1 pt. 2
3. Pairing 2 pt. 1
4. Pairing 2 pt. 2
5. Pairing 3 pt. 1
6. Pairing 3 pt. 2

"... the luscious ambience is subtly overwritten with more exploratory techniques, and at the “sweet spot”, the interface of chaos and equilibrium, we are treated to some very special moments, that most likely blossomed free of human intervention."
–Barry G Nichols, White_Line (UK)

"when the 'real' instruments comes in, things balance quite nicely and makes this a fine work in the otherwise overcrowded scenery of drone, ambient and microsound. "
– Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly.

DROUIN / OLSEN
| Snow Field + RMX

"The seven untitled tracks here have a remarkable cumulative impact, the contrast between their tiny, crystalline details and the vastness of the landscape becoming ever more telling... The CD comes with a second disc of remixes... denser and more layered than the source material, they're an excellent counterpoint which builds to a bracing climax with Drouin's inexorably rising "The Walk Out"."
– Chris Sharp, The Wire.

"A deep work of musical art...If this is the calibre of release we can expect from this label in the future, then I for one will be eagerly anticipating the next installment! Quite superb from beginning to end and a must for lovers of Raster Noton, NVO, Line and other such labels. Highly recommended."
– Mike Oliver, Smallfish (UK)
